California Child Support Guidelines and Spousal Support Agreements
California Support Lawyer
When a couple gets divorced, or a child is born, the California family courts want to be sure that spouses and children have the resources they need to live independently. For this reason, family court judges order child support and, in some cases, spousal support in divorce.
Do you have questions about whether you will be able to receive spousal support or how much you may be expected to pay in child support? I'm California family law attorney Joshua Sutterfield. I can help you understand how the courts will view your case and explain the state support guidelines. Contact my Roseville law office for an initial consultation.

At the beginning of a divorce proceedings, the court may order temporary support for a low-wage-earning spouse and for children. This may be modified with the final support order.
Child Support
The State of California has developed very specific child support guidelines based on parental income and expenses, as well as custody and parenting time arrangements. I can explain the guidelines to you so you have an idea of how much money you may expect to pay or to receive.
- Child Support Enforcement: If you have a child support order and the other parent has not been paying, I can help you get the money you are owed through wage garnishment (getting money directly from an employer).
- Child Support Modification: As your family and financial situation changes, your child support order may need to change as well. A job loss, a cut in pay, a substantial pay raise; these are all reasons why child support may need to be changed. I can help you bring your case back to family court.
Spousal Support
In the State of California, spousal support is not guaranteed. When it is awarded, it is often temporary. However, in the case of long-term marriages (more than ten years), spousal support may be awarded until death or remarriage. The courts determine alimony based on a number of factors, including:
- Each spouse's income and earning potential
- Level of education and training
- Age of each spouse and the length of marriage
- Disability, if any
- The age and needs of any children at home
I can help you gather evidence to make your case in negotiations or family court for or against the need for spousal maintenance. Protect your rights to a fair and reasonable support agreement. Contact my Roseville law office to schedule an initial consultation.
